Strategy:  A large insurance company sought rate increases of 33% stating the reason for the increase was new customers under the Affordable Care Act turned out to be sicker than expected. The new rate increases would be for the following year and would affect all policy holders. On average national insurance companies increased rates from 20-40%, so the rate increase was anticipated, but transitioning customers into the increase involved some finesse and branding. Part of the retention campaign was to send out personalized holiday ornaments for Tier one customers in an effort to show customer appreciation.

Results: The customers loved the holiday ornament campaign. Just over 87% of the people who received the rate increase stayed on as current customers through July of the following year. The brand’s name grew stronger and the company saw the effects of the campaign throughout the year.

Market: Education

Objective: Speeding through school and residential zones was common, and there were too many pedestrian injuries and deaths in one county. Green Ribbon Month was started in 1998 by one county’s Safe Kids Coalition to protect children from being hit by motor vehicles in school zones and crosswalks. Three teenagers were hit and killed in one intersection alone over a period of six years. Awareness was going to be the key factor in making a statewide change.

Strategy: The public awareness campaign included green ribbons displayed on signs, cars, people, fences, trees, and poles. In addition, local PTAs had parents and drivers all sign pledges to drive 5 mi/h under the posted speed in school zones and residential areas, to stop at crosswalks, to yield to pedestrians when making turns, to not pass a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian, and to educate their children about pedestrian safety. Children also signed pledges about safe pedestrian practices. Good media coverage helped the project along, including a publicized press conference with representatives from several organizations and the police department.

Results:
Costs of the program were minimal as sponsors — local printing companies, the health departments, and the Highway Safety Officers — funded the reproduction of posters, information packets that contained bicycle accessories (including the Bicycle Survival Tool), and mailings. Local PTAs spent about $15 to buy ribbons and copy pledge cards.
The project was a success in the county of its origin and soon spread to the entire state. The State Governor declared September to be Green Ribbon Month, and in the fourth year after the program began, more than 35,000 people participated. Most impressively, pedestrian and motor vehicle crashes decreased every year after the implementation of the program.

Case Study: Holds-a-Bit®

Purposes: Securely holds drill bits (larger than one quarter inch) and drivers where you need them most

Market: Retail

Objective: Have customers sign up for a store credit card for a drill/drill bit sale. The credit card would provide 5% off or No Interest if Paid in Full within 12 Months. The Holds-a-Bit was distributed at the cash register, if customers agreed to sign up for the hardware retail store’s credit card.

Strategy: A large retail chain sought to increase customers signing up for store credit cards. History had shown that when customers signed up for these charge cards, the customer purchased more, and in addition, the retail chain was able to market directly and specifically to that customer. However, if the merchant loans customers money to buy the goods/services, there will be additional profit from each sale: the interest collected on the loan (less the cost of funds; merchants typically borrow money from a bank (or other investors) to then lend in turn to their customers). This assumes that the customers do not default on the loans, of course. Cashiers were asked to ask each customer checking out if they would be interested in saving 5% and getting Holds-A-Bit for signing up for the store credit card. The promotional weekend saw credit card applications increase 35% over the weekend before.
